LFR Fall Newsletter

Welcome to the LFR Newsletter

Longmont Food Rescue’s mission is to redistribute nutritious food that retailers have deemed food ‘waste’ to feed hungry, homeless, and low-income populations directly.

Food Rescue Featured in the Longmont Leader

LFR has received local recognition from the Longmont Leader, featuring our food distribution programs in four different articles this past year. July focused on drive-thru distribution models like our Produce in the Parking Lot events, while August addressed the increased need for hunger relief services in our community. Two collaborative, inter-agency meal and grocery programs, spearheaded by Friends of Longmont Youth (FLY), were highlighted in September and October. Thank you, Longmont Leader, for bringing greater public awareness to the pressing issue of food insecurity and hunger relief!

Reflections on Summer 2020

When we reached a personal record-breaking high of over 3300 lbs of rescued food in July, we thought we had hit our summertime peak. But we were completely blown away by our August stats: more than 4200 lbs of nutritious, fresh food saved from landfills and redistributed to people facing food insecurity in Longmont. And those numbers don’t include the additional food distributed through our new onsite grocery programs with FLY, which feed more than 150 families each week. We couldn’t have done any of this without our dedicated team of volunteers, who have collectively logged 400+ service hours so far this year. This summer brought challenges and opportunity, and we are so grateful for our community of food rescue partners and volunteers for meeting the need.

Fresh Food Connect Wrap-Up

Our FFC program came to a close last month, when gardeners began putting their beds to rest for the season. Thanks to our active community of local growers, we rescued more than 265 lbs of excess produce, providing nutritious, homegrown food to those in need. Huge thanks to our bike couriers Taylor Replane and Jamie Ackerson, who ensured this delicious produce was safely transported to the OUR Center for distribution. See you again next summer!

Produce in the Parking Lot: November 15 & 29

Our November Produce in the Parking Lot events will be held at the YMCA parking lot, on the west Lashley side. Food will be divvied up ahead of time, and all vehicles will form a line for distribution at noon. In December, we will distributing food on the 13th and 27th; a full list of our Produce in the Parking Lot dates can be found on our website and our facebook page. LFR continues to follow recommended health and safety practices during COVID-19.

Featured Volunteer: Deedee Kaplan

Deedee started volunteering with LFR in May this year, and has been a food rescue champion all summer and fall! She has rescued over 5000 lbs. of fresh, nutritious food from the Saturday Farmers Market and redistributed it to various low-income senior communities in Longmont. Deedee sends a big public THANK YOU to her neighbor Brian Potter for use of his truck this summer when the market donations got too big for her Prius. Her warm, friendly personality and dedication to her Saturday shifts have helped forge and strengthen LFR’s relationships with our local growers. We will miss her this winter, and look forward to her return in the spring. Thank you, Deedee!
