Happy New Year from LFR! 🎉

Welcome to the LFR Newsletter

Longmont Food Rescue’s mission is to redistribute nutritious food that retailers have deemed food ‘waste’ to feed hungry, homeless, and low-income populations directly.

2020 Year in Review

Longmont Food Rescue had a record-breaking year! Thanks to our incredible network of volunteers, who logged 400+ hours helping feed our community, we:

  • Rescued more than 38,000 lbs. of food in 2020, bringing our grand total to 96,000+ lbs. of food rescued since our founding in 2017
  • Added six new recipient sites, including low-income senior communities and low-income sites that primarily serve families
  • Partnered with HOPE to provide grab-n-go meals for community members experiencing homelessness
  • Doubled our popular drive-up Produce in the Parking Lot events, providing food twice a month and distributing over 9,000 lbs. of food
  • Partnered with Friends of Longmont Youth (FLY) to support the Community Meals Program, through which we distribute nutritious groceries to more than 150 Longmont families every week
  • Implemented purchase programs with nearby farms to provide additional produce to Longmont residents while also supporting local growers

Over the past four years, we’ve steadily grown in our size and scope, rescuing more fresh, nutritious food every year and distributing it to people facing food insecurity. In November and December, we exceeded all previous benchmarks, thanks to a new donor partnership with Alfalfa’s Local Market, which opened in Longmont this fall. With this new resource, we’ve more than doubled our reach, bringing more food to more people than ever before!

Looking Ahead to 2021

In the new year, we plan to continue our growth, while maintaining all our current programs. Our collaboration with FLY is funded through the spring, so we will be providing groceries throughout the winter months at all 3 of our sites. In addition to our ongoing food rescue and distribution, we will begin a dinner purchase program this winter to provide hot meals for our homeless population through our partnership with HOPE, while also supporting local restaurants.
We anticipate that this winter may be particularly challenging for those at risk for food insecurity and hunger in our community, and we hope to help lighten this burden and feed as many people as possible in 2021.
