Note from our Executive Director, Kelly Mahoney:
Dear fellow community members,
Longmont Food Rescue is now 10 months old and we are quite excited for the new season. Why? Because we have worked really hard for a more equity food redistribution system here in Longmont and we are seeing results. We are excited to plan for the next year and strategize on how to live out our mission of bringing fresh, healthy, FREE food to those that can benefit the most, while reducing ‘food waste’ destined for the landfill. As we reflect on what we’ve accomplished thus far and plan for the future, we are certain that Longmont Food Rescue is filling in the gaps in food insecurity here in Longmont and Boulder County. This is a community effort and I want to take a moment to acknowledge and give thanks to our food donors and our ROCKSTAR food rescuers and volunteers.
Of course, all of this work would not have been possible without our food donors. Thanks to Boulder County Farmers Market and those supporting the Saturday Longmont market this season – HUGE THANKS TO OUR MARKET DONRS (in no particular order): Aspen Moon Farm, Honeyacre Enterprises, Rocky Mountain Fresh, Izzio Artisan Bakery, Full Circle Farms, Chiporro Sauce Company, DLC Mushrooms, Eggloo Delights, Haystack Mountain Goat Dairy, Outrageous Baking, Red Hen Farms!
Another consistent supporter of LFR is Tim Quinn with BonaVida Growers. Check out what Tim and his team are doing here in Longmont and consider being a CSA member!!!!! Each month, Tim has delivered 200+ pounds of produce for our Produce in the Park events. Thanks again, BonaVida Growers!
Longmont Food Rescue is also supported by our local Longmont Whole Foods. We send a huge thank you for all the work your team has done to change the culture around reducing food waste. This is a movement and it has to start with food retailers. Thanks for being a model of how food waste reduction is possible and continually working towards new sustainable goals. You folks ROCK! We also want to acknowledge support from our local Lucky’s Market – we are so appreciative to be a recipient of your Bags for Change program. Having the community exposure has been so beneficial and we look forward to partnering with you in reducing food waste as well!
Most of all, I want to give a shout out to all of our volunteers, many of whom have stepped up at last minute to rescue food or commit to helping at tabling events. I am inspired by all of your dedication and we appreciate all of the time you have put into LFR’s mission.
As I have alluded to, we at LFR have been very busy. This summer we started ‘Produce in the Park’ events, bringing food directly to hundreds of people. We started a very successful and sustainable Grocery Program for Longmont Meals on Wheels and at Village Place Apartments. We have redistributed 1000+ pounds of food to Cinnamon Park Assisted Living, one of the only assisted care centers in Boulder County that accepts those on Medicaid. SOOO many great stories from our recipients.
The LFR board echos all of these thank you’s too! We have a great team with lots of heart and are ready to take on the new season! See y’all around town!
